In the past, our audiences sought us out. They knew when our films were playing at a local theater, or broadcast on television. Distribution was orderly and predictable. No more. Today we must pursue our audience in a chaotic media marketplace, first telling them of our existence, then continually engaging them as they digitally screen our films. In the past, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) was an important tool, pointing online audiences to our digital platforms. But as search engines pivot to online AI summaries, with external sources relegated to the bottom of the search screen, we need to rethink our marketing strategy. That means increasingly envisioning our audiences as funders and making our marketing AI friendly.

Twenty-five years ago, director Chen Kaige recommended me to the producer Xu Feng for the film "Farewell My Concubine," and I was asked to adapt Zheng Nian’s famous autobiographical novel "Life and Death in Shanghai." This marked the beginning of my career as a screenwriter. Aside from directing, over the past 25 years, I have written many scripts for domestic and international producers and film companies, in both Chinese and English. There are many professional books available for studying how to write scripts, but I want to share my personal experience, from writing my own scripts to teaching students how to write screenplays.

Any creator's primary responsibility is to society, humanity, and themselves. This sense of responsibility determines the first and most important question when writing a screenplay: the theme. Once the theme is established, the second question is: how to convey your theme to the audience — that is, the characters. With a clear theme and lively characters, the third crucial element is: the plot, which should be entertaining. If you can master these three core questions, the creation of a good script becomes possible. Because these three questions determine the social value, logical coherence, and entertainment aspects of your screenplay.

25年前，陳凱歌導演把我作爲編劇推薦給“霸王別姬”的製片人徐楓，爲徐楓改編鄭唸的著名自傳體小説“上海生與死”。從此開啟了我做編劇的生涯。除了做導演以外，這25年來我爲國內外的製片人和影視公司冩了很多的劇本，中英文的都有。怎樣冩劇本有很多的專業書可供參考學習，我要跟大家分享的是我這些年來從自己冩劇本到教授學生冩劇本的個人經驗。任何一個創作者的首要任務就是對社會，對人類，對自己負責。這個責任感決定了冩劇本的第一個也是最重要的問題：主題。當主題確定以後，如何把你的主題傳達給觀衆，這就是冩劇本的第二個問題：人物。有了明確的主題，有了鮮活的人物，還要有充滿娛樂性的情節，這就是冩劇本的第三個問題：情節。如果能把這三個問題把握好，一個好劇本的産生就有了可能。因爲這三個問題決定了你的劇本的社會價值，邏輯關繫，及娛樂性。
